Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

Well, it was back to running again last night. Not much in the way of fun, either. I had more than a few difficult patients, for various reasons.... some of them legitimate.

The last one wasn't, though... alcohol-induced difficulties there. Young lady had gotten hit in the jaw with a two-by-four and pretty well shattered it. The jaw-bone, not the two-by-four. She was probably pretty when she was sober before her mouth got re-arranged and in a few months she will be again... I just hope that she gets rid of her current boyfriend.

I was all set to leave at 07:00... but nobody was scheduled to come in. About 07:15 my supervisor calls and says that she'll be over shortly so that I could go home. O'well, more overtime.

And I was ready to come home and do some stuff, but by the time I got here I really didn't feel like doing anything, just sitting or better yet, sleeping.

Yeah... sleeping. Great idea. I went ot bed too late yesterday, and I woke up too early, and I need to make up for that.

Only two more nights.

Here in Topeka, we claim the fifth-highest crime rate in the nation. And that's really strange, 'cause last time they did that (released the stats) we weren't anywhere close. That's per capita, of course. However, last week we had four homicides in three days. Trying to live up to our reputation, I guess.

The cops say that the reason that we're there is because they have an excellent reporting system... every little thing goes in the logs. And they say that most other places aren't that meticulous. Well, that may be partly right... but I think that a lot of it has to do with the fact that, ummmm... I have a lot of cop friends, so this is a dangerous thing to say... they don't catch too many criminals. In fact, none of the perpetrators of last week's murders have been caught... not even any named suspects. And there is a long history of people getting away with murder in this town.

And, although Kansas has the death penalty on the books, it's yet to be tested. So, in addition to not getting caught, a criminal has a good chance of not getting the maximum penalty. We recently had a case where a woman had served seven years for killing her husband, got out and then six months later killed an ex-boyfriend. The judge said that she'd be in prison forever, but I'll bet that she's out in ten years.

My personal theory is that criminals have migrated to Kansas from both coasts because they think that the cops here are too dumb to catch them.

Well, I know that's wrong, because a lot of the perps are from Kansas. O'wait! That only means that the cops are smarter than the average Kansan... which means nothing to the world in general, I guess.

If you are following this correctly, you will have realized that I don't know what I'm talking about.

The last four murders were probably drug-related, and people in that community won't talk to the cops. This is understandable, since they might well be next in line for a hole in the head.

Bedtime.

Thanx for being here!
